In this lesson, you will study the lesson I teach on the types of terrorism.  Go to the google drive and look at the power point, also watch the corresponding videos.  Feel free to find additional information on the web.

You can find the link here:

Google Drive Class Materials on Terrorism

  1. There are different types of terrorism.  My hope is you will understand the different types.  I am trying to organize a complex topic, but in this lesson I want you to think about terrorism as organized into these types:
  • People terrorizing the government
  • National Terror Groups
  • International Terror Groups
  • State Sponsored Terrorism
  • Terror By the State Against It's Own People
  • Modern Terror
     2.  After studying the PowerPoint, watching the videos, and researching on the web.  Write a
paragraph or more answering the essential question of the lesson:
What are the types and history of terrorism and how has terrorism evolved over time?
Post your answer by commenting in this blog.  Also, you need to post a useful website (or more) that will help your fellow classmates.  No inappropriate sites (This means no beheading videos, no pro terrorism sites,- you need to find informative educational sites from reliable, reputable sources).

      3.  Read other's posts and react to two other posts by your classmates.  I've linked a google doc which will allow you to view expectations for posting your blog responses here:

  1. Terrorism is the use of violence and intimidation for political aims. Specific types of terrorist activity can include aircraft sabotage and hijacking, attacks on diplomats, and hostage taking (choices, 3). I believe there are many types of terrorism. State-Sponsored terrorism, which consists of terrorist acts on a state or government by a state or government. Dissent terrorism, which are terrorist groups which have rebelled against their government (terrorizing the government). Terrorists and the Left and Right, which are groups rooted in political ideology. Religious terrorism, which are terrorist groups which are extremely religiously motivated. Criminal Terrorism, which are terrorists acts used to aid in crime and criminal profit. The history of terrorism began with the French revolution and has evolved ever since from 1793 to 1793 (choices, 3). The most common causes of terrorism include civilizations or culture clashes, globalization, religion, Israeli-Palestinian conflict, or the Russian invasion of Afghanistan. More personal or individual-based reasons for terrorism are frustration, negative identity, narcissistic rage, and/or moral disengagement (choices, 5-8). Terrorism has evolved over time within the last decade. Terrorism has evolved over times due to the fact that, at first, terrorists did not want to kill a large group of people but now kills thousands of people to grab the attention of the United States. Modern terrorism has never evolved since all that faction want to do is kill citizens and inject fear into the people's minds.

  2. - There are several different types of terrorism. As the years escaladed, so has terrorism. There’s state, religious, pathological, and many more kinds of terrorism. Terrorism first originated during the 1970’s and the early 1980’s around the time the cold war was at its peak. Terrorism is constantly changing. Since 9/11 Terrorism has become stronger. Recruiting hundreds of people. A portion of American. When I think about terrorism I don’t just think about people from the middle east. I think about everyone. We go. We invade. we destroy just as much as they do. - Teresa Simpson

  3. Throughout the years, there are many types of terrorism. But, the main types of terrorism according to the website, http://hlsonline.eku.edu/hls-101-terrorism, are State-Sponsored terrorism, Dissent Terrorism, Terrorist and the Left and Right, Religious Terrorism, and Criminal Terrorism. State-Sponsored terrorism is an attack on a country by another country. Dissent terrorism is when a group of people rebelled against their own government, kind of like a coup d'etat. Terrorists and the left and right are stubbornly stuck in their political ideology. Religious terrorism are the people who are die-hard believers in their religion and are motivated by it. And lastly, Criminal Terrorism are people who do terror attacks to help out the crime or get some sort of criminal profit. If you look at this then look at the history of the world, there are quite a few terror attacks. For example, if you look at Thailand, they had the most coups than any other country. The way terrorism has changed in my opinion is that back then the usual terrorism was coups because many people did not agree with the monarchs, rulers, and dictators (dissent terrorism). But nowadays, the terrorist attacks are mainly about Religious and Criminal Terrorism. The main people to blame for that is ISIS. Their goal is to establish a new caliphate (Islamic State) throughout the middle east. And, since we helped out the middle east I'm guessing that's why they target us too. Since, we're in the way of their goal.

  4. There are many different types of terrorism some ranging from difference in religion to terror against a persons own government. According to http://handofreason.com/2011/featured/types-of-terrorism there are eight types of terrorism State Terrorism, Religious Terrorism, Right Wing Terrorism, Pathological Terrorism, Issue Oriented Terrorism, Separatist Terrorism, and Narco-Terrorism. State Terrorism is the original form of terrorism dating back to 1793 after the French Revolution to have power over the population. This type of terrorism has evolved because during the French Revolution there were thousands of be-headings of anyone going against the French government but today State Terror is usually through a dictator such as Saddam Hussein against the Kurdish. Religious Terrorism has to do with someone of one group going against another group because they do not believe in the same ideas that their group does. Right Wing Terrorism include groups such as gangs and militias to try to take down minority groups. Left Wing Terrorism try to turn capitalist countries to turn communist. Pathological Terrorism is are people who like terrorizing for the fun of it they usually terror as a "lone wolf" rather than with a group. Issued Oriented Terrorism is when a group wants to terrorize companies because they do not agree or think it is wrong how they are going about their business. Separatist Terrorism is when a state inside a country wants to separate from the country. Lastly Narco-Terrorism is usually when two gangs will terrorize each other so their gang can make more money off the drug business. Terrorism started with the French Revolution taking out anyone that went against the government then terrorism evolved into different types like Left Wing Terrorism because parts of the world were becoming communist wanting to take out all of the capitalist countries. Now today most terrorism is Religious Terrorism being in the middle east because they do not believe in the same ideas we believe in and they do acts of terror for "In the name of Allah" but I strongly believe that is not what Islam is about and they just want everyone to convert to their religion because they want power in the world.

  6. Terrorism by definition is the use of violence and intimidation in the pursuit of political aims. There are several different kinds of terrorism they include state terrorism, terror by the people against the state, terror by the people, national terror, modern terror, and international terror. Terror has evolved over time. State terror is when the government uses terror to control its people one example is the how the USSR was imprisoning everyone who was suspected to be an enemy. Terror by the people against the state is when the people are committing terror against the government or its members. Terror by the people is when people commit terror but its not necessarily against the their government. It was not listed in the class materials but terror by the people sounds like it could be pathological terror in some cases. Pathological terror is explained here http://handofreason.com/2011/featured/types-of-terrorism. National terror is terror by a group directed at an inter nation one example was the assassination of President James A. Garfield. Modern terror is often seen as religious motivated terror. The most previlent example right now is ISIS. Last but not lest there is international terror is terror that is aimed at or ends up affecting the international community. One example is the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria. His death lead to first World War. Terror hasn't necessarily changed in its goals or methods but acts have been becoming more violent in scale and internationally driven. I say that because the older acts of terror were less of scale compared to modern terror. Such as the assassinations of James A. Garfield and Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria.

  8. Terrorism is transformative because it has changed over time. Often terrorists commit their acts for either religious or political reasons. Modern terrorism now involves mass murders and suicide by the terrorists. An example of this would be the attack on the World Trade Center in New York on September 11th and the Pentagon crash where terrorists committed suicide and killed innocent people. In 1798 after the French Revolution the word “terrorism” was first used in European countries. It means to “rule by using terror” because the dictatorship government of Paris was terrorizing its own citizens. Terrorism went from being committed by the government to being committed by groups of people who were not connected with the government. These groups wanted to kill the government leaders. An example of this is the murder of the Archduke Ferdinand in 1914. Both modern and early terrorism has 2 purposes, one is to put pressure on government to change policies and another is to intimidate others and scare them into doing what the group wants.

There are a total of five types of terrorism: Criminal Terrorism, Dissent Terrorism, Religious Terrorism, State-Sponsored Terrorism, and Terrorism and the Left and Right. Criminal Terrorism are terrorist acts that commit crimes and make a profit from it. Dissent Terrorism are terrorism are terrorist group who fight against the government. Religious Terrorism is terrorist group who carry out goals based off religious acts or characters. State-Sponsored is the kind of terrorism in which a government or state commits terrorist acts. Terrorists and the left and right is the kind where groups are formed by political ideology who aim to overthrow conservative and capitalist systems. Terrorism is defined as the use of force or violence in order to achieve political goal. With this, it has also evolved into many types with also a background of it. There has always been a history of terrorism where many groups try to seek power by using violence, intimidation and terror. Terrorists would often use threats to create fear among the public, persuade citizens to go against their “weak” government, and to get immediate publicity. It first started with the French revolution, and eventually, it began to evolve into something bigger and more complex. Types of terrorism includes: state-sponsored terrorism, dissent terrorism, terrorists and the left and right, religious terrorism, criminal terrorism, and more.

Terrorism Is the unlawful use of force and violence against people or property to intimidate the government. Terrorism has changed a lot because in the 1990's they had their threats, bombs, and plane crashes. Terrorism has gotten more aggressive since then and has evolved into people being kidnapped, beheaded, and tortured on camera. Types of terrorism are state-sponsored terrorism, dissent terrorism, terrorists and the left and right, religious terrorism, and criminal terrorism. State-sponsored terrorism is when you perform terrorist acts on states or a government, Dissent terrorism is when terrorist group separate themselves from their government such as ISIS.Religious terrorism when terrorist are motivated by their beliefs like when Omar Mateen pledged his allegiance to ISIS then went and killed 49 people at a gay nightclub.

Terrorism is defined to be the act of violence and terror to intimidate people. There are different types of terrorism that have been used in history. For example; Josef Stalin who used Terror by state to targets its own people which resulted in 20 million soviet deaths. There are also other kinds of terrorism like Religious Terrorism, in which terror groups are highly religious motivated. State Sponsored Terrorism, consists of terrorist acts on a state or government by a state or government. International terrorism, the acts of violence against an individual which for example is known to be ISIS for spreading terror around the world. Last but not least, Homegrown Terrorism in which individuals create violence against its own people like Dylan Roof who murdered nine people at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina. The list goes on, but one of the current that’s developed tremendously is the Narco-Terrorism in which dangerous drug cartels create fear and tremendous violence among the people around it, for example; big cartels in Mexico have carried out mass burials, beheading, human trafficking, organ trafficking and other severe acts of violence. Many others like Pablo Escobar’s famous beheading of Colombian politicians.

Terrorism is broken down into certain types and there are six of them. People terrorizing the government an example would be back during the french revolution when many people were killed that were against the revolution. There National Terror groups seek self determination, back in 1881 when revolutionaries killed Tsar of Russia. International Terror groups involve in dangerous acts in the u.s or anywhere in the country. State sponsored terrorism is terrorist acts they are by a state or government. Modern Terror is the act of terror which are sometimes by non-governmental activist. 22. Terrorism is the act or use of violence and intimidation in the pursuit of political aims. Terrorism has taken over this nation in ways we can’t control. Is terrorism based on one act or a certain way something is done? Terrorism has been around since the 1970’s and 1980’s it has peeked since 911 in 2001. There are many different types of terrorism for example; terrorizing the government, terror groups, international terror groups, state sponsored terrorism, and many more. The main types of terrorism that the United States itself faces is, terrorizing the government and terror groups. As many of us know the horror that came with the terrorist group Al Qaeda with 911 and now ISIS with the killing of innocent people that refused to join them. The United States has suspicion that these two terrorist groups are related and ISIS has influence off the group Al Qaeda. The history of terrorism has a long track record and has been going on for centuries, but why has it became more popular over the years. Terrorism has quadrupled since 2001, what is the reason for this? Terrorism has evolved over the years due to the fact they kill large amounts of innocent people to get the attention of the United States. Terrorism doesn’t just have a toll of other countries attack on the United States but also the attacks within our own people. -Talisa Jackson

Terrorism is motivated violence towards individuals by non-state groups. There are different types of terrorism such as: Modern Terror, State Sponsored Terrorism, Terror by the State Against Its Own People, International Terror Groups, National Terror Groups, and People Terrorizing the Government. Terrorism was inspired by the la Terreur that destroyed revolutionary France. Then Paris introduced the development of hostage taking. Today, hostage taking is an everyday act of terrorism. Terrorism is always changing. It will continue to be our enemies most important warfare strategy.

Terrorism is the unlawful use of force and violence against innocent people and or property to intimidate government or any political objects. Terrorism has been around since the French revolution and comes in many different forms from many different people. There is State-sponsored terrorism which is terrorist acts on the government or state. Nationlist terrorism which is motivated by nationalism. Dissent terrorism which are terrorist groups rebelling against their government. Religious Terrorism which is motivated because of religious beliefs and Criminal Terrorism which are terrorists acts used to aid crime or criminal profits. Terrorism has evolved immensely, and mainly because the world has changed. The motive before was mainly religious based terrorist acts but now its culture clashes, deprivation and moral disengagement. Modern terrorism is always at the top of political conversation because of groups like Isis which are a international terrorist group. There reason behind their heinous crimes are all religious based. They strive to make the world all Islamic faith, and do things such as be headings, suicide bombings and executing those who do not belong to the Muslim group of Sunni's. Terrorism in my opinion cannot be terminated and will always be one of our top problem as a whole society.

  26. There are many varieties of terrorism some in coming from difference in religion to terror against a person’s government. From the information found on this website http://handofreason.com/2011/featured/types-of-terrorism I found that there is many types of terrorism, there is State Terrorism, Religious Terrorism, Right Wing Terrorism, Pathological Terrorism, Issue Oriented Terrorism, Separatist Terrorism, and Narco-Terrorism. Religious Terrorism is when someone of one group going against another group because they do not believe in the same things that the other group does. Right Wing Terrorism include groups such as gangs and militias to try to take down minority groups. As for Left Wing Terrorism try to turn capitalist countries to turn communist. The State Terrorism is the original form of terrorism going back to the 1700’s after the French Revolution war to have power over the whole population. This Terrorism has happened because of the French Revolution there were thousands of be-headings of anyone going against the French government but today things have changed and the State Terror is usually through a dictator. Separatist Terrorism is when a state inside of a country wants to be separate from the country. Following Narco-Terrorism, Narco- terrorism is when gangs terrorize each other so that their gang can make more money off the drugs. Also Pathological Terrorism is people who like terrorizing for fun are called "lone wolf" rather than with a group. Lastly Issued Oriented Terrorism is when a group wants to terrorize companies that do not agree or think it is wrong how they are going about their business. Terrorism started with the war and now today most terrorism is Religious Terrorism being in the middle east because they do not believe in the same beliefs that we believe in. - Jerae Williams

  27. Terrorism is a big concern in the United States today. We live are daily lives on edge not knowing what can come are way after the brutal attacks that occurred on 9/11. Terrorism is mostly used by group of people who use their power to intimidate people. The different types of terror are; terror by people against the government, terror by national terror groups, international terror movements, state sponsored terror, terror by state and modern terror. There are many ways that the world has try to prevent terrorism. The National Joint Terrorism Task Force was established in 2002 which is a fusion of local, state, and federal agencies acting as an integrated force to combat terrorism on a national and international scale. Terrorism has evolved over time at first they just wanted to kill a person or a small amount of people but now they target thousands of people at once. Terrorism is a plan attack that takes some time to plan. ISIS is currently one of the biggest terror threat to the world. - Tony James

In today's society us Americans we are always aiming to be prepared for terrorist attacks especially after the 9/11 terrorist attack on the United States which was named one of the biggest terrorist attacks in the United States. State Terrorism has happened due to the French Revolution which there were thousands of be-headings...be-headings of anyone going against the French government but today things have changed and the State Terror is usually via dictator. Separatist Terrorism is when a state inside of a country wants to be separate from the whole country. Following Separatist terrorism is narco-terrorism, narco- terrorism is when gangs terrorize each other so ones gang can make more money off drugs. In addition, pathological terrorism consist of people who like terrorizing for fun which they are called "lone wolf" rather than with a group. Lastly issued oriented terrorism is the act of a group coming together to terrorize companies that do not agree or think it is wrong how they are going about/handling their business. Terrorism started with the war and now today most terrorism is Religious Terrorism which is in the middle east. 29. Hello, my name is Ahmir Edmonds and this is my overview of terrorism.
There is several different types of terrorism. I'd like to give an overview of a select five that include state-sponsored terrorism, dissent terrorism, terrorism and the left and right, religious terrorism, and criminal terrorism. State-sponsored terrorism would basically be terrorist acts on a state or government by a state or government. Dissent terrorism is terrorist groups which have rebelled against their government.Terrorists and the Left and Right are groups rooted in political ideology. Religious terrorism consists of terrorist groups who are extremely religiously motivated. Finally we have criminal Terrorism, this is when terrorists acts are used to aid in crime and criminal profit. Although terrorism is just terrible and seemingly pointless. It usually does have a goal and or a reason. "The most common causes or roots of terrorism include civilizations or culture clashes, globalization, religion, Israeli-Palestinian conflict, or the Russian invasion of Afghanistan."
