Google Drive Class Materials on Terrorism

  1. There are different types of terrorism.  My hope is you will understand the different types.  I am trying to organize a complex topic, but in this lesson I want you to think about terrorism as organized into these types:
  • People terrorizing the government
  • National Terror Groups
  • International Terror Groups
  • State Sponsored Terrorism
  • Terror By the State Against It's Own People
  • Modern Terror
     2.  After studying the PowerPoint, watching the videos, and researching on the web.  Write a
paragraph or more answering the essential question of the lesson:
What are the types and history of terrorism and how has terrorism evolved over time?
Post your answer by commenting in this blog.  Also, you need to post a useful website (or more) that will help your fellow classmates.  No inappropriate sites (This means no beheading videos, no pro terrorism sites,- you need to find informative educational sites from reliable, reputable sources).

      3.  Read other's posts and react to two other posts by your classmates.  I've linked a google doc which will allow you to view expectations for posting your blog responses here:

  1. Good afternoon, this is Tommy Nguyen. I learned that there were five different types of terrorism before WW2: Terror by people against the government, terror by national terror groups, international terror movement, state sponsored terror, and terror by the state. After WW2, modern terror became a political instrument of revolutionaries. Those who seek independence and self-determination. There is still state sponsored terrorism and now religiously motivated terrorism. Many of them pursue nuclear, biological, or chemical weapons.

  2. The word "terrorism" refers back to the French Revolution, or the "regime of terror." The types of terrorism include: state-sponsored terrorism, dissent terrorism, criminal terrorism, and religious terrorism. The evolution of religious terrorism has spanned over the last 50 years with the emergence of Al Qaeda and ISIS. Terrorism is pursued based upon moral or individual reasons. Each type of terrorism have different motives. Some are to receive attention from governments or organizations. Others plan to take out or fix something that does not align with their beliefs.

Terrorism the unlawful use of violence and intimidation, especially against civilians, in the pursuit of political aims. Terrorism has evolved over time due to the first, terrorists did not want to kill a large group of people but now kills thousands of people to grab the attention of the United States. Modern terrorism has never evolved since all that faction want to do is kill citizens and put fear in both citizens and governments mind. There are a couple of different types of groups,(1)People terrorizing the government, for example 9/11.(2)Nationalist terrorism which seeks to form self determination in some form, ranging from gaining greater autonomy to establishing a completely independent state.(3)International terrorism which involves violent acts or acts that are dangerous to human life and are violations of the criminal laws of the U.S.(4)State sponsored terrorism which is government support of violent non-state actors engaged in terrorism.(5)State terrorism is terrorism that refers to acts of terrorism conducted by a state against foreign targets or against its own people.(6)Modern Terror. Each type of terrorism has their own way of doing things.

  4. There are six different types of terrorism, which include people terrorizing the government, national terror groups, International terror groups, state sponsored terrorism, terror by the state against its own people, and modern terror. People terrorizing the government include killing of government leaders such a presidents prime ministers and many more important people that work for the government. The reign terror was an event during the French revolution. In this event, thousands of people were killed due to connection of the former monarchial government. National terror groups are very powerful and organized. They have specific reasons why they targeted specific countries. President McKinney assassination shocked the nation. A terrorist killed him in 1901. In addition, ISIS is a national terror group feared by many our country. The international terror group also known as anarchist international means someone that tries to bring anarchy and kills various significant people in other countries. State sponsored terrorism is government support of violent non-state actors engaged in terrorism. The assassination of Archduke Ferdinand Gavrilo Princip sparked World War 1. Terror by the state against its own people is very cruel and abhor. For example, John Stalin used terrorism with in his own country to put an end to dissents by imprisoning and executing millions. Lastly, modern terror is the act of terrorism by using it as a political instrument to seek self-determination and independence. For instance in the 1972 Olympics, 11 Israel Olympians were killed by Palestinian terrorist to symbolize a protest of the Israel Government policies. Terrorism has evolved immensely due to all the new technology and weapons of mass destruction. In addition, it evolved in a way where started inside countries to outside the countries by other people. Terrorism to me is a hate crime and the start of a war.

One of them is state-sponsored terrorism which is when there is terrorists using violence on the government or state. Another type of terrorism is dissent terrorism which is when a group of terrorist is against their government. Next is religious terrorism which is terrorist groups that are religious and is willing to use violence for what they believe in. Criminal terrorism is when terrorist do criminal things to earn profit. Terrorism began with the French revolution. Terrorism has evolved since the French revolution because of globalization, religion, and civilians.

  6. Terrorism has been going on for many years. The word terrorism first emerged at the end of the eighteenth century in post-revolutionary France. A century later Paris too it further to hostage taking. That is when that became a use of terrorism today. The cause of terrorism or the roots include civilizations, or culture clashes, globalization, religion, and many more. There are also many types of terrorism such as state-sponsored terrorism, dissent terrorism, religious terrorism, and criminal terrorism. Terrorism is much different today. Today a non-stated group perceives terrorism as an act of aggression.

With the six that I learned about such as; national terror groups, people terrorizing the government, international terror groups, terror by the state against its own people, modern terror, state sponsored terrorism has a special way of showing it evolved. Everyone may have thought terrorism as one thing but they actually have a deeper meaning when separated. Ever since WWII ended there has been an accelerated development of terror. There was a violent social change were which evolved into anarchism and communism.

State sponsored terrorism for example in November 1972 to 1952 were taken hostage in Iran for a year than released. This was an scary situation for many it left them scared and uncertain.

This all really originated with one of the deadliest attacks to the america nation in history. 9/11 when two airplanes crashed into the twin towers an after that security and protection has risen. Racial profiling was considered a must against Islamic due to the previous incidents. But, terrorism wasn't always like this, especially back in the European as middle eastern time.

Terrorism evolved by time passed by in which it's directed to someone or an organization in a certain place. The French Revolution was a slaughter of humans to oppress their population. The French created the start of using the word " terrorist and terrorism". There are now different acts of terrorism such as the 9/11 incident where the World Trade Center was a target where jets crash into the Twin Towers causing explosions. The ideas of causing terrorism expands in creativity and violence as it can be connected with social media outlets.

  13. There are many kinds of terrorism. They are state, religious, right wing, left wing, pathological, issue oriented, and more. Terrorism has been around for a long time, but it's recently becoming prevalent. In the past, terrorism was less violent and mainly used for attention or to get a point across. When it started to get violent, especially in the twentieth century with assassinations, many saw how effective it was and resorted to terrorism to gain more power. Even now, terrorism is used even though it puts innocent people at risk. A recent attack was on the twin towers by Muslims who thought they were doing what was right, but what they did was far from it. There are more and more emergence of religious terrorists which is also a way terrorism has evolved. In the process, the U.S. and other governments are creating ways to deter their actioons.

The types of terrorism displayed are people terrorizing the government, National Terror Groups, International Terror Groups, State Sponsored Terrorism, Terror By the State Against It's Own People, and Modern Terror. These have all played major roles in the world dating all the way back to The Revolutionary war, one world leader who practiced extreme acts of terrorism was Dictator Stalin of the Soviet Union. Stalin was big on terror by the state on the people of the Soviet Union killing as young as twelve years of age and resulting in the death of millions of Soviets. Throughout the 1900's modern terrorism, and terrorism against the people were very strong including the holocaust and the olympic games terrorist acts. Moving into the 21st century terrorism with the people against the state, and terrorist groups became highly popular with two important ones being ISIS and Al Qaeda. LEQ: What are the types and history of terrorism and how has terrorism evolved over time?
There are currently six different types of terrorism: People terrorizing the government, National Terror Groups, International Terror Groups, State Sponsored terrorism, Terror by the state against its own people, and Modern terror. Over the years, terrorism has changed abundantly. After World War II, terrorism became more prevalent as a political instrument of people who sought independence from colonial powers. It also was used by those who sought self determination. Groups did not necessarily have specific aims they were trying to achieve. Once advances in satellite technology came to be, terrorists realized that they could gain more attention if they chose well known targets. It was also thought by experts in the 1970's that terrorists did not necessarily act to kill many people, but rather to get their point across. Then came state-sponsored terrorism around the 1980's. This made terrorism more deadly as terrorists benefited from having states sponsor their activities. Another worry during this time was the rise of religiously motivated terrorism such as the attack on the World Trade Center in 1993. Around the 1990's, United States Officials became increasingly worried due to the fact that it seemed that now terrorists not only wanted wanted many to watch the crimes they committed but they now wanted to kill as many people as possible.

  18. Terrorism is the unlawful use of violence and intimidation, directed at civilians for political aims. There are different types of terrorism such as: State Sponsored Terror, Terror by the State, Modern Terror, Terrorizing the Government, National Terror Groups and more. The origin of terrorism was The Reign of Terror from 1793 to 1794 during the French Revolution. The government arrested or executed thousands of people that were in connection to the previous government. Terrorism has changed over time. In the 70's terrorism was not for the reason of killing many people but for the attention from a lot of people. In the 90's, it seemed as if terrorist not only wanted the attention but also wanted a lot of people dead too. Now, most terrorism is through religious terrorism by groups such as ISIS or Al Qaeda.

  19. Terrorism consists of criminal activity. There is no single definition for terrorism, since it deals with a wide range of activity, all designed to intimidate and instill fear. From the information given, I came to the conclusion that the 5 types of terrorism include: state sponsored terror, terror by the state, modern terror, terrorizing the government, and national terror groups. Terrorism is not new. its history dates back to the year 1789 during the French Revolution. Back then, terrorism was an instrument of the state. Throughout the years since, terrorism has evolved tremendously. Now, terrorism is used by non-state groups and our weapons have changed to chemical, nuclear, etc.

  20. Contrary to what many may believe terrorism is not new or even relatively new. In fact terrorism has been around for centuries. In fact there was a group of Jew's in the first century , called the sacrii, that murdered enemies and collaborators in their campaign to oust their Roman rulers from Judea. This and many other events are examples of terrorism in the pre-modern world. However, time causes evolution and advancement and as the world progresses so does terrorism. Some would argue that modern terrorism originated from the Reign of Terror instigated by Maxmilien Robespierre in 1793, following the French revolution.Robespierre had enemies of the revolution killed, and installed a dictatorship to stabilize the country.Fast forwarding to even more modern terrorism we have groups such as Isis or Al-Qaeda who perform acts of terrorism such as 9-11 and chemical bombing. Terrorism has evolved in many aspects over time. It has evolved in the reasons why it is performed and how it is performed. Hopefully we can reach an agreement with our enemies so that innocent lives are no longer lost to these acts of violence.

  21. According to terrorism-research.com, terrorism is “the unlawful use of violence and intimidation, especially against civilians, in the pursuit of political aims.” Individuals and organizations that use violence to achieve their political goals are called "terrorists" when they aim their attacks at civilians who are not directly involved in shaping government policy. Terrorism has evolved from when is first came upon, at first terrorist groups didn’t target a large group of people attack, but now they try to attack thousands at one time to get their message across. I found that there are various types of terrorism which include, state terrorism, religious terrorism, right wing terrorism, pathological terrorism, issue oriented terrorism, separatist terrorism, and narco-terrorism. The earliest known organization that exhibited aspects of a modern terrorist organization was the Zealots of Judea. Known to the Romans as sicarii, or dagger-men, they carried on an underground campaign of assassination of Roman occupation forces, as well as any Jews they felt had collaborated with the Romans.
