The history of modern terrorism began with the French revolution and has evolved ever since. The most common causes or roots of terrorism include civilizations or culture clashes, globalization, religion, Israeli-Palestinian conflict, or the Russian invasion of Afghanistan. More personal or individual-based reasons for terrorism are frustration, deprivation, negative identity, narcissistic rage, and/or moral disengagement. ReplyDeleteTerrorism is when groups with a specific purpose in mind use terror to achieve their goals. There are various types of terrorism, including terror by people against the government, by national terror groups, international terror movements, state-sponsored terror, and by state.
Terrorism has evolved over a long course of time. After WWII, it became a means of revolutionaries for those who sought independence and self-determination. In the article, "The New Yorker", it describes how terrorism has changed and how it is today. It states, "...terrorism is now a standard feature of asymmetric warfare, with fewer wars pitting states against each other and more of the combatants being non-state actors with less traditional forms of weaponry." This shows how terrorism is far more different than what it used to be, compared to the Wall Street bombing. While the Wall Street bombing used dynamite as their weapon and killed people by streetcars and shrapnel, attacks like the 9/11 on the Twin Towers used a hijacked plane to murder innocent civilians.

Terrorism has been around for a long time. A old christian group called "Crusaders" used this tactic against non-believers of Jesus Christ. Terrorism is when an individual, group(s), or state(s) uses violence against civilians to intimidate a government. There are 6 ways of terrorism. Terrorism is performed by people against the government, by national terror groups, international terror movements, state-sponsored terror, terror by the state, and by religiously motivated terror. Terrorism began with the French revolution and has evolved ever since. When it came to terrorism back in the day, people would usually kill, kidnap, or harm one or a small group of people to send their message. For example, in 1972, 11 Israeli Olympians were killed by Palestinian terrorists. This was a way to protest the Israeli government policies. Later on, in history like the 90s, Terrorists stop killing one individual and small groups of people and started killing in large crowds with bigger groups of people to send their message, they even started using more nuclear, biological, and chemical weapons to do it. For example, in 2001, a series of 4 attacks by al-Qaeda involving them hijacking and crashing jet airliners that killed 2,996 people, injured over 6,000 others. Terrorism is a terrible thing to do and I feel when you want something to change or happen you don't always have to use violence, there is always a peaceful way to handle things.

Those are 3 types out of the others. The terrorism that we know of as today is the unlawful use of violence against civilians to pursue political aims, or invading another premises. One of the terrorist attack that went into history that changed our lives forever was 9/11. On September 11, 2001 on a Tuesday morning an American Airlines Boeing 767 loaded with 20,000 of jet fuel crashed into the north tower of the World Trade Center in New York City. It left a burning hole near the 80th floor of a 110-story skyscraper killing hundreds of people and trapping thousands inside on higher levels. 9/11 will be one of the terrorist attacks that will never be forgotten and one of the terrorist attacks that people still have theories about. Another attack that went down in history was the Boston bombing marathon on April 15, 2013 killing three people & injuring about 264. Bombs exploded about 12 seconds apart at the marathon's finish line, Barack Obama described this tragic event as an act of terrorism. There are various forms of what terrorism actually defines to. The word originated from "The Reign of Terror" that prevailed in France from 1793-1794. The French revolutionists that were doing the terrorizing thought of it as a positive term, in which the leader of the revolution, Maximilien Robespierre, even said, "Terror is nothing other than justice, prompt, severe, inflexible." Under this thinking, around 40, 000 people were executed in "The Reign of Terror." There are five types of terrorism: State-Sponsored Terrorism, Dissent Terrorism, Terrorists and the Left & Right, Religious Terrorism, and Criminal Terrorism. The modern form of terrorism seen in the past decades started after WWII. In the fight against British rule, nationalist groups came about and are considered the first to recognize the value of publicity in terrorism; in which they choreographed their violence for audiences beyond their geological location. Through the 1960's and 1970's, the number of terrorist groups grew with not only nationalist, but those motivated by ethnic, racial, and religious ideologies. Many of these groups adopted methods to publicize their goals internationally, like the kidnapping and murder of 11 Israel Olympic athletes by Palestinian terrorists. As time goes by, terrorists have evolved by using new technology and scaring the public to achieve their goals.

DeleteIn general, terrorism originated from "The Reign of Terror" that triumphed in France. Between the fall of 1793-1794, there were over 3,000 executions took place in Paris. The following and various types of terrorism consists of “terror against the government” for instance during the French revolution, thousands were killed, by the leader of the people. Terror by national terror groups is another, Tsar was assassinated because they felt like he was being unfair. In addition, you have the international terror movement, where the assassinations were “worldwide”. Lastly, you have terror by the state, which Josef Stalin used terror to suppress millions of people, following with incarceration. Particularly, there are three different typologies, revolutionary, subrevolutinary, and establishment. These three types give and thorough understanding and evaluating terrorist attacks. For an example, terrorism has evolved drastically by the (hijacking)terrorist attack on 9/11/2001, this specific attack changed the nation entirely, providing us better protection, higher security & and preventing the horrible actions that struck the entire human race.

Terrorism throughout the years had been something utilized by the weak. Although this is usually the case, this does not mean that terrorism is all the same. In fact, the first act of terror from 1793-1794 was during the French Revolution. The government was a target of terorism by people who were unhappy with the current state of their government, and they killed those who were connected with the former monarchial government by Robespierre, but this is not to be confused with a revolution. Another type of terrorism was by organizations dedicated to terrorism. This type of terrorism was what caused the Assassination of the Tsar Alexander II in 1881. The group, named Narodnaya Volya, felt that the Tsars had been ruling over the people of Russia in unfair ways, so they resorted to terrorism to get back at the Tsars. There's also other types of terrorism such as State Sponsored Terror, which caused World War 1 when Archduke Ferdinand was assassinated by Gavrilo Princip. After World War 2, the way terrorism was viewed had changed. In 1979, the Iranian government had sponsored the 52 Americans taken hostage as a way to strike back at the United States, a state bigger than Iran. There's also religiously motivated terrorism that occurred in the 80s all the way to 2003. The motivation behind such terrorism was the result of no other options, or simply the world's social/political issues have been steered wrong.

There are many types of terroristic acts. They all vary by reason. It is important to understanding the reasoning behind terrorist acts. I still think till this day there is no single description for a reason behind every terrorist attack. Not only are the aims, members, beliefs, and resources of groups that do terroristic act differ , but so are the political causes of their effects as I said before. One popular typology identifies three different classes of terrorism which are revolutionary, subrevolutionary, and establishment. This trilogy provides a useful understanding and evaluating terrorist activities and reasonings behind them
