Roots of Democracy in Philadelphia

During the halftime show on the evening 9/11/11 ESPN commentator Chris Berman was reviewing the day's NFL scores. He concluded his report by saying, "Of course there is one team we all root for and it's the greatest team ever assembled".  He was speaking about the USA.

Our experiment in democracy was never tried the same way before nor has it ever been accurately replicated. What makes our country great? How is Philadelphia part of our greatness?

Write a paragraph or more explaining how our trip to Philadelphia to see the National Constitution Center, Liberty Bell and Independence Hall, helped you gain a better understanding of our democracy and/or our country.

    1. Jamera Ricks 4B -When visiting all these places it made me understand more about democracy. The history of all the places had different effects in the world and on different people. With the time era today it shows that the world today had come a long way in politics.Going in to these buildings with questions and coming out with all of them answered with me understanding them is a big deal. Knowing the thing that people signed for us to have freedom and the events that lead to things that had a important impact in life really impacted my learning.

    2. We went to Philly, it was boring. it did not help me gain any understanding of democracy because i did not pay attention during the trip that much. Also the food there was over priced. Finally the bus i was on was crappy and it dripped a lot from the ceiling. Worst trip ever.

In our trip to Philly I learned that we have power, "we the People" have that power. it helped going to Philly because it helped me get information from the source I witnessed where our founding fathers assembled to plan for the future of this country. I also learned about our freedom we have many privileges maybe many other counties might not have. I learned that we are stronger than we believe because we have the power to assemble and maybe it will help us change laws so it can best fit us. The freedom we have is great and we are honored to have that power.

The trip to Philly was very fun in my opinion and I enjoyed my time there. I learned a lot of different things and the experience was very beneficial to me. I learned that without our Founding Fathers this country would not have the documents that keep it intact. Also, our democracy is well constructed in order to protect the freedoms and rights of individuals. Lastly, one of the most important things that I took away from the trip was that we as the people have the ability to change something if we do not agree or we do not think it is just. Overall, this learning experience was extremely informative and Philly is a remarkable city with a incredible background/history.

My visit to the National constitution center was not only exciting but it also gave me a hands on experience of Americas's History rather than just reading facts from the History Book. Believe me I was pumped going to the Constitution Center, for the first time I would actually experience the making of a great Nation.During the trip I saw many important sights at the Constitution Center, however the Liberty Bell and the Independence hall gave information that I had never heard of before. One thing that I learned about the Liberty Bell was how it is a symbol of pride and freedom. During my time at the independence hall I learned about the Shinning Sun on the chair and how it came about. I also learned about the meeting that had taken place at the room.

During my time at the National constitution center I learned that a lot of time and effort and debates in order to establish democracy that is right for the USA. At the Liberty Bell I didn't get to learn much because our group didn't get to stay long. I did read about how the bell was a symbol or representation of freedom and that we had to protect it from the British. During my time at the independence hall I got to see the half sun in the court room and learn that it was a rising sun. At the court room the declaration of independence was signed there. Overall I learned that democracy takes a lot of team effort and collaboration in order to be what it is now.

'We the people'. Those three words I heard a lot before and i didn't quite get what they meant. On the 18th of September, i went to the national constitution center, visited the liberty bell, and went to independence hall and discovered where those words came from. They were from the production of the founding fathers creating the constitution and our bill of rights. It leads me to believe to all of the positive that has been done for the country and stop focusing about the negative. Even though our country is going through a troubled situation right now, 'We the people', must stick together and stay strong to restore our country to the land of the promised once again.

During my time in Philadelphia at the National Constitution Center I learned that there were many different changes that were added to our amendments over the years and our constitution played a large part of this change. At the Liberty Bell Museum I had learned about the many different stories that were told about the liberty bell and how it got its name also the large part that abolitionists played in representing the bell. In the Independence hall I had learned about how people and meetings were made in this historical place.

Our trip to Philadelphia to see the National Constitution Center, Liberty Bell and Independence Hall, helped me gain a better understanding of our country today. I believe that our history is what makes our country great. Without our history we would not be able to learn from the mistake and proceed onto the future. Philadelphia is a huge part of our history and a part of our countries greatness because it is the place where many significant events have occurred such as the signing of our Constitution (the legal document that gives all American citizens equal rights), and the Declaration of Independence (the legal document that gave America Independence/ freed us from England). There are many other reasons why Philadelphia contributed to our countries greatness and there are also many other aspects of our history that contribute to the United States that many Americans love today.

Visiting the National Constitute Center, the Liberty Bell, and the Independence Hall helped me gain better knowledge of our country in many ways. One way the constitute center helped me understand our country because I learned who signed and all of the rights that we as Americans have. It also helped me understand how important those rights are. If any of those rights are violated then that is a serious crime. The liberty bell helped me understand our country because it showed how important our country really is because that Liberty Bell originated from England. The Independence Hall helped me understand how important our independence as a country is. We can be ruled by some other country and not be able to do what we want. It also showed me exactly where the Declaration of Independence was signed and how much thought was put into it.

By far, out trip to the National Constitution Center at Philadelphia, PA has improved my knowledge of our country's consitution and its history. Our nation's history is what defined our nation and its laws as of today. The phrase "We the People" has been stuck in my head ever since we visited that place on September 18. The main thing I learned in the Contitution Center is that we should follow the amendments of our nation to ensure a right living and peace. In addition, the cracked Liberty Bell still exists and I learned that it some of the ambassadors from other countries visited there to spread liberty throughout not only our nation, but this whole, wide world. The Independence Hall amazed me, as it is the place where our nations's constitution was born and that the Declaration of Independence was signed, making it the beginning of what it is now the United States of America. Visiting these places made me think that I saw history, as Philadelphia is the birthplace of our country.

I have learned many things during my time at the National Constitution Center, Liberty Bell and Independence Hall about our democracy and our country. First is the phrase " We the People". After I heard it, I thought about our freedom immediately. Under our democracy, we have gained a lot of freedoms, such as the first amendment, we have the freedom of speech, petition, press, assemble and religion. The first ten amendments were adapted to the Bill of Rights in 1791 and twenty seven amendments have been made. The main thing I learned in the National Constitution Center is we are the citizens of this country and we deserve to earn our freedom. At the Liberty Bell, I learned that it is a symbol of abolitionist movement, the civil rights and the suffrage. Especially, it is a symbol of the phrase "We the People", our liberty. I love the time that I was in the Independence Hall because the Declaration of Independence was signed here, the America was born since that time. Finally, Philadelphia is the place that the America began its first journey.

During my time in Philadelphia at the National Constitution Center, my knowledge increased. We visited the museum, Liberty Bell, and the Independence Hall. The museum educated me about the constitution and amendments and their importance in our nation. At the Liberty Bell I learned that it symbolized America's freedom/Independence and how it got its name. Philadelphia contributed to our nation's greatness and history. At the Independence Hall I learned it was where the Declaration of Independence was signed and how important it is to out nation. Overall, this trip helped me gain a better understanding of our democracy/country.

As I was attending the field trip to the Liberty Bell, National Constitution Center, Independence Hall and the Museum, I feel as though I was able to better understand our country and our democracy more than just politics. Our first stop was at the museum, which thoroughly explained the amendments and how each of them were settled into the Constitution. Independence Hall educated me about our independence in our nation and where the Declaration of Independence was signed and so forth. The Liberty Bell was basically a sign of our freedom and suffrage. It is important to us, as much as it was important to the people back then. Just the time spent at these historical sights made me realize that Philadelphia was where it all started and we should grow to appreciate it.

While visiting Philadelphia I learned that America has been a democracy for many years. At the National Constitution Center the play that I watched was very interesting because it showed how America progressed. I also learned that because we are citizens we have more of a chance to change our society than actual government figures. The scavenger hunt we went on as well also helped me understand because the facts, videos, games, and audio were easy to understand. The best place out of the trip was actually visiting the Liberty Hall because I felt like I was apart of it all. it was nice to see where they sat and discussed and where it allow started off as. The trip was fun and I appreciated seeing it up close.

During the trip to the national constitution center, I learned that a lot of time and effort was used to make things as they are today. I thought it was really cool how we learned of the origin of "We the People". I also liked when we went to go see the liberty bell. I had always wanted to see the real thing up close, and it looked really cool. I also liked when we went to Independence Hall and saw where the signing of the Declaration was and all the discussion of the things that made America what it is today. This was definitely a fun learning experience for me.

Our 11th grade class trip to Philadelphia increased not only my knowledge of the Constitution, but the history of the United States as a whole. The trip made me realize that our entire country's political system is based on the Constitution. The Constitution is the most important piece of writing in our nation's history. Without that document, the United States would be a country of chaos, one without leadership or organization. Due to this document and its amendments, we as citizens have all the rights that we have today. It is important that we recognize these rights and freedoms and use them to ensure that our country remains great as the years go on.

Visiting the Constitution Center, The Liberty Bell, and Independence Hall on our trip to Philadelphia gave me a better understanding of America's constitution. Each place we visited helped me understand the constitution a little more. In The National Constitution Center I learned that the constitution has changed for many years until the final one was made. The quote “We the people...." stood out to me while I was there as well, the quote basically is saying that us America. Citizens are united. At The Liberty Bell I learned that it gained iconic importance when abolitionists in their efforts to put an end to slavery, and that America adopted it as a symbol. In The Independence hall I learned that, that is where the original constitution was made and signed. I believe that this field trip was very helpful for the whole junior class.

Our trip to the National Constitution Center really helped me realize all of the people in history that worked hard for our country to be the way it is now. I learned that people used to have to fight for their rights and freedom; they did not have the rights that we have today. I now know how far our country has come. From visiting the Liberty Bell, I learned that the Liberty Bell symbolizes our freedom. I also learned about how far the Liberty Bell has come over the years and how many people have taken picture with it. After visiting Independence Hall, I learned that the courtrooms used back then are completely different than the courtrooms used today. I also learned that the chair George Washington used to sit in during court is still there in Independence Hall. Overall, I learned that our country has always had a democracy, it has just changed, for the better, over time.

Philadelphia holds a lot of our country's history, and that is why it is a great place to visit if you want to learn about why our country is the way it is today. Our class trip to Philadelphia was very informative. In the National Constitution Center I got a deeper understanding of the phrase "We the people". The Constitution is a very important piece of writing, which have given us many of the rights that we have today. In the Independence Hall I learned about the Declaration of Independence and how important it is to our country. After viewing the Liberty Bell I learned how it is a huge symbol of our freedom. There were many people, including our founding fathers, who fought for a fair country, where we the people can live equally with rights and freedoms. Overall I really enjoyed the trip.

Our trip to the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia was a great learning experience. It helped me get a better understanding on the history of the United States and the Constitution. The trip made me realize that people used to have to fight for their rights and freedom in order to get to where we are today. We as a nation are lucky to be able to do the things we can now, versus what people could not do before. This actually made me think of how far our country has come. Independence Hall helped me understand our independence in our nation and showed where the Declaration of Independence was signed. The Liberty Bell symbolized our freedom that we now have as a nation. It is important that we cherish the rights and freedoms that we have now because those before were never able to see or feel what this feels like.

While at the trip to Philadelphia, I learned more about the history of our country. Our democratic government is one of a kind. Our nation's history was debated and created there. "We the People" is just a three word phrase but it means so much more to our nation from which the government was built upon. The Constitution is part of our history showing how this government was formed. It shows the changes we made to our government and our rights. The Constitution Center showed us how it all began and the changes our government went through. The Independence Hall was the place where it was all debated over and decisions were made. The Liberty Bell is one of the major symbols of our history representing our liberty. Our government can be made, changed, or destroyed by us for us.

On our visit to the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia it was helpful learning experience. I learned that the constitution shapes our political world. It shows what is acceptable and unacceptable for politics. An interesting fact I found out about, there is a misspelled word on the Liberty Bell which is Pennsylvania. Speaking about the Liberty Bell, it symbolizes our freedom. In the Independence Hall I learned about when the Declaration of Independence was signed. We should realize and appreciate our freedoms and rights because we never know when we could lose them.

While visiting the National Constitutions Center, I learned a lot of things. However, I should point out that I will never want to ride a bus to Philadelphia when it is raining. I learned that our country began in Philadelphia. That is where we decided to become more than just territory of the English. We wanted our own rules and our own government. We wanted to thrive off of our land and be Americans. I learned that our country is much more important because thousands died trying to ensure that we became our own country. This may not be the best country in the world, but it is a country with a unique past and a bright future.

Our trip to Philly definitely helped me understand more about our country that I never knew before. For one,I learned that Philadelphia is the place that many of our nation-changing events occurred. The signing of the constitution, the things written in our amendments all happened there. Also, the theater show we saw in the Constitution Center was also very informative, as it explained to us how our country gained it's independence and how we came to be one of the most powerful nations in the world. I think that learning about these things through textbooks and worksheets might tell us what happened, but actually visiting the site of it all makes an even better experience of our history. I learned about many things in the Constitution Center, Liberty Bell, and Independence Hall that will stick with me and help me relate to the materials learned during my term of Your Gov, Your World.

  24. During the trip to Philadelphia last Wednesday I learned a lot about the making of our country. There was a lot of facts at the constitution center. They showed us this show about the making of our country, with its founding fathers, and even before that, then they continued to show things closer to the present times and the people who helped . When we viewed the liberty bell it made me realize how great the history of our country was. Being in the constitution hall was also a great feeling because in that very room the constitution and many other important documents were signed just a couple hundred years ago. I also think it was amazing how out of all of the things that were replaced, the chair with the rising sun that Ben Franklin sat in is still there. I believe it an honor to go there and it made me love my country even more.

The trip to Philadelphia to visit the National Constitution Center I learned that America has only existed for 225 years. Also, America started with 13 colonies and fought for their freedom from the British. The Constitution and the Declaration of Independence help maintain the peace of America, without it we would have a country of chaos. The trip to Philadelphia helped me learned that there were not many who signed both the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, Benjamin Franklin was one of the few. Due to the trip to Philadelphia, I was able to understand the origin of the Democracy our country has.

I learned how we started (with the 13 colonies) and how we continued to progress (becoming the 50 states). I also learned about the people who contributed to our independent nation. There were many people who worked hard in order for citizens in America to have the opportunity to live independently. These people also gave citizens the opportunity to live fairly. Our trip to Philadelphia to see the National Constitution Center, Liberty Bell and Independence Hall, helped me gain a better understanding of our democracy and our country in lots of way. One of them was that I gained the understanding of why our country made the decision to have a democracy instead of an anarchy. Another thing I learned was that some of the 13 first states had their own navy which threatened the others states. I also learned that the liberty bell has something called the spider which keeps it from spreading the infamous crack. Also, I think that the visit helped me memorize the constitution because it was in almost everywhere I went, but then I again I forgot it... Anyhow, the visit was kind of cool I just wich next time I go I don't have a scavenger hunt so that I can actually enjoy the visit. :)

During the fielfd tirp I thought we were walking on history. It helped me gain a better understanding of what was our decomcracy was like in the 1800s. Most of these things that our tour guild said was that most of these things were help secrectly and was open to the public. I've also learned one of our original 13 state didnt agree with the constituion, which is rode island. Im guessing it was such a small state that it was given less power. I had a great time on the trip, the food was kind of good, the people who works for around the building were helpful, and I'll give it 5/5

Our trip to Philadelphia helped me to get a better understanding of our country. I have visited the same sites before but I feel as though I was not mature enough to see the significance of the information that was there. This time, I felt as though I was able to take something away from the trip. I see that so many people have fought for the right for us to vote. I see the some people have take advantage of that opportunity while many others have not. After seeing all of the documents, amendments, and names of those involved in the creation of our constitution, it showed me that it was not an easy process. Also, it made me grateful of the rights, and freedoms we have because in some other countries these don’t exist. The trip to Philadelphia in my opinion was very inspirational and helped us to grasp a hold of new information, while incorporating some of what we already knew. This trip helped me to better understand the concept of democracy in America. To me, Philadelphia plays a major role in our democracy because this is essentially where it all began, so to speak. In other words, Philadelphia was one of the only places where segregation was not necessarily evident. This also is where many well renowned famous men who founded the Constitution lived. This is an extremely historical place and to me stood as one of the major building blocks to making our country all that it is today. Philly is one of the places where freedom was founded and what changed it all.

I feel as though the Philly trip helped me to better understand democracy by expalining where it came from. Watching the video at the constitution center and looking through the presentation taught me that our rights and democracy took a long time to develop. Also visiting Independence Hall and actually getting to see where the constitution was signed was amazing to see.

I found the Philly trip to be very educational in a fun way. Going to Philly expanded my understanding of Democracy and what it means. One of my favorite part of this trip was the performance done by the lady at the Constitution Center. She explained everything in such an easy way to understand. A quote that stood out to me when she was speaking was, "they finally included me in We The People".

I found the Philly trip to be educational and very helpful. What i liked most about the trip was the beginning when that lady did the film. The effects were something I never saw before. The group that I was in was a well behaved group which made it even better. It would be nice if we went on more trips. This trip helped me learn why things are the way they are today.

The trip to Philly was very helpful in my understanding of the concept of democracy and our government. I believe learning the history or roots of something can help lead to a better understanding of whatever it is you are studying. I believe the trip was a good resource. I learned a lot about the constitution, and the people that created the constitution. Also, I learned a lot about the images/figures that are symbolic of our country's freedom, and creation. All in all the experience was very fun, and educational.

The trip to philly was a wonderful experience. It educated me more about our history and gave me more knowledge about how I can make a difference. While touring the museum and The Liberty Bell I have learned that there was one world spelled incorrect on the Liberty Bell which is known as today as The State of "PENNSYLVANIA". In addition , I also learned that the amendment rights is not just to protect your rights but overall to give you FREEDOM. There are multiple of things that I seen while visiting that was created during that time period to represent freedom. The most powerful information I believe was given during this educational trip was differences makes the most changes. The reason I say that is because a lot of important people (citizens, presidents, vice presidents etc..0 sometimes had different opinions or ways to go about things but in most cases wanted the same solution which during this time was FREEDOM.

The trip to Philly was very interesting. I really enjoyed being able to step foot where people did back in time. I also enjoyed seeing the court rooms and the Liberty Bell. The part that I liked the most was, using the voting polls to see which president that I fall under. The only part that I did not like about this trip was the scavenger hunt. I believe that having to complete a scavenger hunt really cuts off the learning that could be taking place because, one is stressed about filling out a paper.

I did not went to the field trip to Philadelphia but i did learn some things about by doing the work that was left behind. i learned about the quote that were said by people in the history. The quote talked about the responsibility of the government. The other assignment that i we had to do was to write an essay. By the writing i learned about the governments role in the peoples lives.
