Task:  You will study history & types of terrorism.  Then you will write a paragraph answering the essesntial question of the lesson followed by reacting to other student's work.

Grading:
10 points - paragraph answering essential question
 5 points - listing a relevant website
15 points - reacting to two fellow students work
= 30 points

Due Date:  Wednesday 5 pm

Goal:  Understand the history of Terrorism

How to Youtube Video

In this lesson, you will study the lesson I teach on the types of terrorism.  Go to the google drive and look at the power point, also watch the corresponding videos.  Feel free to find additional information on the web.

You can find the link here:

  1. There are different types of terrorism.  My hope is you will understand the different types.  I am trying to organize a complex topic, but in this lesson I want you to think about terrorism as organized into these types:
  • People terrorizing the government
  • National Terror Groups
  • International Terror Groups
  • State Sponsored Terrorism
  • Terror By the State Against It's Own People
  • Modern Terror
     2.  After studying the PowerPoint, watching the videos, and researching on the web.  Write a
paragraph or more answering the essential question of the lesson:
What are the types and history of terrorism and how has terrorism evolved over time?
Post your answer by commenting in this blog.  Also, you need to post a useful website (or more) that will help your fellow classmates.  No inappropriate sites (This means no beheading videos, no pro terrorism sites,- you need to find informative educational sites from reliable, reputable sources).

      3.  Read other's posts and react to two other posts by your classmates.  I've linked a google doc which will allow you to view expectations for posting your blog responses here:

    Lesson Essential Question Response:

The different types of terrorism would be State Terrorism, which restricts to acts by non-state actors. Another, is Bio-terrorism, which refers to the international release of toxic biological agents. Also, Cyber-terrorism, which uses information technology to attack civilians and draw attention to their cause. Lastly, Eco-terrorism, describing violence in the interests of environmentalism. The history is historically significant individuals, entitles, and incidents associated, weather its right or wrong with terrorism. It has evolved from the revolutionary and nationalistic movements that occurred over the time.

the different types of terrorism are state terrorism where its the systematic use of terror by a government in order to control its population. religious terrorism where it can be particularly dangerous due to the fanaticism of those who practice it and their willingness to sacrifice themselves for the cause. Right wing terrorism where it aims to combat liberal governments and preserve traditional social orders. and left wing terrorism where it is carried out for the purpose of advancing a specific issue. terrorism has evolved overtime from things like an assassination or public speaking to group terrorism where the whole country is being terrorized.

Terrorism is not a new thing in our world. Terrorism was use for hundred of years in our world. For example, In French Revolution terror was use against the government. It lead to the death of 12,000 people. Terrorism would use to get independent for some countries but don't work for other. Today, terrorism is less common but they are more deadly due to increase of weapon of mass destruction and technology.

There are multiple types of terrorism. State Terrorism is the systematic use of terror used by the government, that helps control the population. It is also the original form of terrorism. Religious Terrorism is a terrorism that has to do with self-sacrificing or suicide bombing. Right wing terrorism is terror committed by a militia or gang. Left wing terrorism are groups that seek to overthrow the government and attack the system to do so. Pathological terrorism are terrorists who seek joy in doing so. They are mostly seen in school shootings, they do it for their own pleasure. Issue oriented terrorism is terrorism done for a specific purpose such as bombing abortion clinics. Narcotic terrorism has to do with illegal drugs.

Terrorism is a criminal act that influences an audience beyond the immediate victim. This tactic and strategy is far from new so it has been around for a very long time. Along with the many ways it has been described, there are many different types of terrorism. The types of terrorism include people terrorizing their government, national terror groups, international terror groups, state sponsored terrorist, state terrorizing their own people, and modern terror. Terrorism has evolved over time with more intelligence from people. It changes constantly and is becoming the main tool for war. The strategy is evolving to be the "principal irregular warfare strategy of the 21st century."

All these types of terror have one similarity. The similarity is that it all contains a lot of violence. Terrorism has always been there some dating back to 1700,s while others are like modern terrorism. Terrorism have been from many religions because some people believe that there should be a new world order. A type of terrorism is against the government. Many different types of groups have terrorized the government thinking that it is controlled by their enemies. The start of the WW1 was by an assassination. I believe that most of the terrorism is caused by people who want the world to be as they would want it.

There is actually six types of terrorism . Here are a few. There is political terrorism were the people of one political faction is to intimidate another. Non political terrorism is a terrorist act that on group penetrates another because of an issue usually religious factors. Quasim terrorism is when a victim or group uses the same tactics like regular terrorist but doesn't really harm the civilian. State terrorism is when an exiting government uses violent actions to get what they want. Over time I think terrorism has gotten more aggressive and more evasive. Terrorist try to find ways to get exactly what they want nowadays and will try anything to get achieve their goal.

Terrorism means the use of violence and intimidation in the pursuit of political aims. The types of terrorisms are: Terror by people against the government, terror by national terror groups, International Terror Movement, Terror by the State, state sponsored terrorism, religiously motivated terrorism, and modern terror. Terror by people against the government is people unleashing terror on their own government, for example The Reign of Terror (1793-1794), which was an event during the French Revolution in which thousands were arrested or executed. State sponsored terrorism is government support of paramilitary organizations engaged in terrorism. An example of that would the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand by Gavrilo Princip in Sarajevo which sparked WWI. Terror by state is a ruler or dictator torturing its own people. Josef Stalin used terrorism to suppress dissent by executing millions and imprisoning others. As a result of that, 20 million Soviets died. Terror changed after WWII. After that it became a political instrument for revolutionaries, those seeking independence and self-determination; that is known as modern terror. Religiously motivated terrorism was terror inflicted upon other people by religious extremist such as the Taliban.

I did not agree with your opinion ("terrorism has calmed down") due to the fact that in other parts of the world (places excluding the US) thousands of acts, each on a smaller scale, add up to nearly 10 times the amount of deaths that took place in the attacks on 9/11 in 2013 alone. (Of which I assume is the "tragedy our country experienced" you are are referring to the attacks on 9/11) However, according to what is being shown on television and social medias, it does appear that things have "calmed down". Besides what is being shown, things have not "calmed down."

In 2013, nearly 10,000 acts of terrorism took place around the world. These include Narco-Terrorism, Separatist Terrorism, Issue Oriented Terrorism, Pathological Terrorism, Left & Right Wing Terrorism, Religious Terrorism, and State Terrorism. Many of which took place in Africa, Pakistan, Syria, Israel, etc. According to The Choices Program, most acts of terror aren't meant for the sole purpose of killing people, instead they want to prove a point, scare people, and get noticed on a global scale. However, the attacks on 9/11 were provoked by each motive above including the purpose of killing people. Over 3,000 people were killed as millions watched in terror from their television screens. To this day, attacks of mass destruction are still taking place (excluding the US). Various regions in the Middle-East are responsible for a vast majority of such acts. Over time, terrorists have moved to social medias to get exposure. Things like beheading and explosions are most popular today. Popular is a rather insensitive of way of saying it however, it is indeed true...

There are different types of terrorism and terrorism has evolved over the course of the time. Terrorism became a political tool that people used against the state and also as a motivation tools. There is terrorism by the people against the government, which is citizens terrorizing against the government. During the French Revolution, thousands were arrested or executed only because they were all related to monarchial government. Terror by national terror groups is terror on one’s own country by a terror group of the same country. An example of that would be the assassination of the Tsar (1881). Revolutionaries killed the Tsar of Russia Alexander II. International terror movement is the worldwide movement of secret cells of anarchists. These terror groups were responsible for the murder of the President of Italy in 1894 and the President of Italy in 1900, Prime Ministers of Spain in 1897 & 1912, Empress of Austria in 1898, 1886 Haymarket Square bombing, and the assassination of President McKinley. Terrorism has evolved in many different ways. It started from just taking someone’s life because of disagreements between two parties to destroying worlds because of disagreements. The kind of weapons that is being used during the attacks and many other parts have changed. Terrorism really has evolved over the course of time.

There are six types of terrorism. Civil disorder are protests to send a message to a political group. While this is intended to be non-violent, it can cause large riots. Political terrorism is used by one political faction to intimidate another. Civilians are targeted even though the message is intended for the government. Non political terrorism are those that are any other reason which is not political. This terror is mostly religious. Quasi terrorism is another type where a criminal is trying to escape from the government by taking civilian hostages. Although the goal is not terrorism, it is an act of terror. Limited political terrorism is basically the same as political terrorism but generally one time plot and to protest the policy. Lastly, state terrorism is violent action by a government to achieve a particular goal. It is usually a conflict between two countries.
Terrorism has changed in various ways throughout time. There are much less terrorism but the motive and the type has changed. Religious, state and political terrorism are the most common today.

Terrorism evolved over time by the decrease of assassinations which was the most popular method used by terrorists. The weapons have been improved compared to decades ago. The types of terrorism are people against the government, national terror groups, international terror movements, state sponsored terror, terror by the state against its own civilians, modern terror, and if we go more in depth there is religiously motivated terrorism. Terrorism has dated back to the 12th century and has developed since then. An example of people against the government would be the event that happened during the French Revolution called the Reign of Terror where the people that were killed had connections to the monarchial government by Robespierre who was the leader of the people. The assassination of the Tsar of Russia Alexander II happened in 1881 because Narodnaya thought that he wasn’t just in ruling. This would be an example of national terror groups. International terror movements however were the Anarchist International. It was the secrets cells of anarchist from all over the world. They killed a whole range of people from the President of Italy to President McKinley. An example of state sponsored terror happened on June 28th, 1914, where Gavrilo Princip murdered Archduke Ferdinand and happened to influence World War I. Joseph Stalin terrorized and executed around 20 million Soviets making it categorized as terror by the state against its own civilians. Modern Terror was more focused on seeking independence and self-determination. During the 1972 Olympics, Palestinian terrorists held 11 Israeli Olympians hostage. They used modern technology to send the message. It signified the protest against Israeli government policies. We saw a bunch of religiously motivated terrorism during the 80’s through the 2000’s. The people were mostly concerned about the usage of nuclear/chemical weapons. Over the years terrorism has evolved because it is adapting to the changes in the world. These changes benefit terrorists to develop new strategies and are capable of new techniques to terrorize. Back then it was murdering and assassinating a certain group of person. Now with all this new technology it is as simple as dropping a bomb.

The goal of terrorism is pretty much the same. Which is to commit acts of violence to draw attention to themselves and their cause. There are six different types of terrorism in the world. State Terrorism is definitions of terrorism restrict it to acts by non-state actors. It also been argued that states participate in international terrorism often by proxy. Second one was Bioterrorism, which is refers to the intentional release of toxic biological agents to harm and terrorize civilians. Third was Cyberterrorisms is use information technology to attack civilians and draw attention to their act. Fourth type was Ecoterrorism, this type is a recently coined term describing violence in the interests of environmentalism. Nuclear Terrorism is another type that refers to a number of different ways nuclear materials might be exploited as a terrorist tactic. Last but not least, Narcoterrorism is has had several meanings since its coining in 1983, it once denoted violence used by drug traffickers to influence governments or prevent government efforts to stop the drug trade. These six type terrorism has involved over time by changing their various way over times and there are less terrorism now today then before but terrorism motivate and types has changed, most of terrorism today are religious, state and political are most common type today.

Some people, such as the U.S. State Department, thinks that terrorism means politically motivated violence directed at civilians and perpetrated by non-state groups. While others believe that terrorism should include violence that governments perpetrate against their own citizens or against the citizens of other countries (Responding to Terrorism Challenges for Democracy). The different types of terrorism are religion, politics, and cosmic war.Terrorism is not new, it has been going for many years. During the years 1793-1794 The Reign of Terror occurred, thousands were either arrested or executed. A national group assassinated the Tsar of Russia Alexander II in 1881. Terrorists use the same strategy that was used many years ago, they use fear.

  24. There are many different types of terrorism. And terrorism is classified as the use of violence and intimidation in the pursuit of political aims. Different kinds of terrorism is State Sponsored Terrorism which is a terrorist act on another state by a state. Also state terrorism where people use terror by a government in order to control a group of people or a population. Religious terrorism is where people with certain morals & values are willing to act under their religious standards, like sacrificing themselves for their own belief or cause. Both right & left wing terrorism is focused on political views. Like ideology. And I personally think terrorism is still in full affect today. I mean it might not be as prevalent here in the U.S. but it still does occur in other countries. And even if we don't have national or international terrorism going on in our country we still have a lot of inside killings going on. And we still are affected by other terrorist groups in other countries.

There are a few types of terrorism such as terror by people against the government, terror by national terror groups, international terror movements, state sponsored terror and terror by state. The different types occur depending on what the groups are trying to defend or prove. Groups act out of political motivations not necessarily desire for senseless acts of violence. However most of it is used to intimidate populations and weaken and destroy political opponents. Many significant events are the beginning of terrorism such as Reign of Terror (1793-1794), Assassination of Tsar (1881), Anarchist International (1886-1912), Assassination of Archduke Ferdinand and lastly Joseph Stalin's execution and imprisonment of millions. After WWII, the purpose of terror has evolved where revolutionaries are only seeking independence from colonial powers and those struggles of self determination.

Most people believe that terrorism is the use of violence and intimidation in the pursuit of political aims. Although, there are many different types of terrorism such as terrorizing the government, National Terror Groups,International Terror Groups,State Sponsored Terrorism,Terror By the State Against It's Own People, and Modern Terror . Throughout the years it had progress into something bigger and better. It started off simply by spreading as a political instrument of revolutionaries. Those who are seeking independence from colonial powers, and those in struggles of self-determination. After the event of the Munch Olympics in 1972 everything changed. Terrorists learned the wider the audience, the greater the impact of their actions. This is why terrorism became more deadly and effective.

Terrorism is always changing as of now some would describe is it as "the calculated use of unlawful violence or threat of unlawful violence to inculcate fear..." As the world progresses and makes changes more and more of our adversaries use this strategic tool. Early practices of terrorism did not leave a particular philosophy or doctrine on their use of terrorism. During that particular time period terrorism and warfare had no differentiation. State sponsored terrorism is the practice of government support to terroristic organizations providing supplies, training and other forms of aid.

The history of terrorism started back after World War II, it was a spread of different revolutionaries, people seeking for independence from colonial powers and others in struggles of self-determination. As terrorism carried on it became more deadly, there were specific types of terrorist activity which included: aircraft sabotage and hijacking, attacks on diplomats, and hostage taking. Terrorist really only strike at an event meant to symbolize the unity of humankind (ie. The World Trade Center). They do this because they want people to know who they are and what they are doing. In other words, they want you to watch them.

Terrorism composes of a group of humans who act out violently against others in order to obtain and overthrow established power or intimidate other civilizations. Aside from this general statement, there are many subgroups of terrorism. There are six types of terrorism including People Terrorizing the Government, National Terror Groups, International Terror Groups, State Sponsored Terrorism, Terror by State against Its Own People, and Modern Terror. People Terrorizing the Government is typically a protest, against a decision made by the government that results in violence. National Terror Groups are people that assemble to pose terrorist actions driven by nationalism. International Terror Groups do activities that violate many U.S. criminal laws with the intentions of intimidations. State sponsored terrorism are groups who are sponsored by a country’s government. Terror by State against Its Own People is pretty self-explanatory. Modern Terror is people who aren’t with the government killing people for political reasons. I believe terrorism went from attacks to receive public attention, to committing violent acts for bloodshed.

There are many types of things that can be or are classified as acts of terrorism. The most common types of terrorism however are State terrorism, (Political Terrorism,) Religious Terrorism, and International Terrorism. These types of terrorism stuck out to me as well because of how deep these types can be explained. In example State Terrorism is terrorism, so an act against one own people within the state. Another way to describe state terrorism is also considered as state sponsored terrorism in which can be considered countries like Cuba that adhere to strict orders / rules about daily life. Religious terrorism on another hand can be considered acts commented for one religion. For example the terrorist group Palestinian Islamic Jihad which believed there actions were justified in the eyes of the god. . Back then it was murdering and assassinating a certain group of person. Now with all this new technology it is as simple as dropping a bomb. I understand that terrorist have a message that they want people to hear but the way they go about sharing their message is wrong.

While learning about terrorism I realized that there are a few different types of it. The main 2 types of terrorism are political and religious. Religious terrorists are motivated by their belief of something bad occurring. While political terrorists turn to political campaigns to address their concerns. Terrorism has changed over the years. It changed exactly after WW2. It became help for people who are seeking independence and self-determination. Also, recent terroristic acts occurred out of beliefs that people were being lied to and betrayed. For example, the Tsar was assassinated because people felt that the Tsars did not rule fairly and that they had no other choice.

Ecoterrorism is terrorism spread outside of the state it came from. bioterrorism is terrorism caused by chemical reactions. An example is the nazis putting jewish people in gas chambers.I feel that terrorism is an unnecessary thing to do. Terrorism has escalated over time. It went from injuring people, to killing people and blowing up buildings. Also, terrorism involved with chemicals is something very new.

The reason most of these types of terrorism stuck out to me is because of the background definition of the types. For example; state terrorism is the act of terrorism to ones state or own people. Religious terrorism is based on motivations and religious influence. I don't think that terrorist should go about blowing things up and stuff just to get there point across. I believe that is the wrong thing to do. It's crazy how easy it is for a terrorist to plan a terrorist attack. I believe it's because of the technology we have today.

There are many different types of terrorism whether it be national, global, international. Then theres the different types like state, bio, cyber, eco, narco and nuclear But one thing that they all use violence and threats to intimidate or coerce, especially for political purposes. There has really been a change in the way people have committed terroristic occurrences, they have got smarter and more modern. Before they didn't realize how much attention they could get their threats , schemes and plots have changed on a whole other level. With the technology and weapons available today its literally possible to almost do whatever you want. When in the wrong hands lots of things can go bad. The terrorist group who attacked the 1972 Olympics realized that there were other ways to get more attention on a bigger scale and that incident helped changed the minds of many terrorist. I believe a world without terrorism would be a peaceful one ,but not a real world at all because there is always going to be that one person who wants to start a revolution of some sort but ultimately turns into a terroristic movement. One that nobody wants ,but in the end you're either for or against them, whether you believe it or not.

Terrorism is defined as the use of violence to frighten the people in an area as a way of trying to achieve a political goal. Yes there are many different types of terrorism, but that does not many that any of them are right. One type of terrorism is State Terrorism, the systematic use of terror by a government in order to control its population. An example of states Terrorism would be the 1793 French Revolution that resulted with thousands of executions. Another type would be Relegious Terrorism, motivated by religious grief. Then there is right and left wing terrorism. Right wing is terrorism aimed to combat liberal governments and preserve traditional social orders. Left wing terrorism is when groups seek to overthrow capitalist democracies and establish socialist or communist governments in their place. There are many more types of terrorism that have been tried or used many time that are just not right.

Although terrorism is a broad term, there are actually several types of terrorism. For example, state sponsored terrorism is when states provide assistance to terrorists. State terrorism grew throughout the 1980’s because people began to realize it came with benefits. Another form of terrorism is national terrorism is when the nation puts one religion over the others in hopes to create a new nation or split away from another nation. International terrorism is when groups work in several different countries, but have a specific focus for their activities. There are also other forms of terror including people terrorizing the government, terror by the state against its civilians, and modern terror. Terrorism evolved over time as well as became more deadly and I personally think it’s still in effect today. Terrorism is basically a cry out for independence and promotes or displays a group of people acting out violence to bring attention to themselves if the right targets were chosen.

  42. The U.S State Department defines terrorism as politically motivated violence directed at civilians and perpetrated by nonstate groups. Some argue that the definition of terrorism is violence that governments commit against their own citizens, while others argue that it is the violence against political leaders. Each of these definitions make up the fact of violence being used by groups to frighten certain people in areas when trying to achieve a political goal. Terrorism has existed for a long time and is used for many reasons. Originally, it was used by states with less power who were trying to escape colonial powers, and as a tool to destroy a political opponent. One Type of terrorism is State Terrorism, which is the systematic use of terror by a government as a tool to control its own population. A perfect example for State Terrorism happened during the 1973 French Revolution where thousands of people connected to the monarchial government and its leader Robespierre, were arrested and executed. Religious Terrorism is one of the biggest most controversial acts of terrorism because it is carried out based on motivations and goals that have predominantly religious influence. There are also National and International Terrorism. Terrorism today has become more deadly like the carrying out of aircraft sabotage and high jacking, as well as attacks on diplomats and hostage taking. The U.S. has learned that terrorist groups today are not only attacking to make a point, but they are attacking to kill. Terrorist groups are also using tactics like striking at events meant to symbolize humankind as a tool so bigger audiences will receive their message. An example of these kind of strikes would be the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center. Today U.S. government officials are alarmed because the creating of nuclear, biological, and chemical weapons has become a big threat.

It is vital to bear in mind, however, that there are many kinds of terrorist movements, and no single theory can cover them all. From the latest events that have been taking place in Syria and the U.S. dealing with the threat ISIS. Terrorism has accelerated its development into a major component of contemporary conflict. Primarily in use immediately after the war as a subordinate element of anti-colonial insurgencies, it expanded beyond that role. In the service of various ideologies and aspirations, terrorism sometimes supplanted other forms of conflict completely. It also became a far-reaching weapon capable of effects no less global than the intercontinental bomber or missile. It has also proven to be a significant tool of diplomacy and international power for states inclined to use it.

is not a new thing, terrorism has been around for many years. It used to be a tool used to get their point across without promoting violence. As time went on attacks became more and more violent trying to claim as many lives as possible. Today it is used as a tool to strike fear into people’s hearts. It is very useful especially for the smaller states trying to strike fear into bigger states like the United States. However terrorism is not just to strike fear into the heart of people, but to get their point across and project their voice out there. The types of terrorism are terror against the state, religiously motivated terrorism, state-sponsored terrorism, and domestic terrorism. Terrorism can be used as a tool for people’s freedom or to oppress the citizens.
