Justices Seek 'Strict Scrutiny' In Affirmative Action Case

What is the 10% program in Texas?  What do you think of it...is it fair or unfair?  How are those who don't make it in to the U of Texas law school measured (those who don't get in  via the 10% program?  What do you think of this policy?  Is it fair or unfair?  How did the Supreme Court rule on these policies?  Do you think Supreme Court cases should be evaluated more rigorously or less rigorously?

  1. The 10% program is where the University of Texas admits anybody that is in the top 10% of their class, into the college. Not only do i believe it's fair i think its a great idea for all colleges across the country. The other people that fall under that top 10% have to apply and if they are a minority they get a bit of a bump in the chances of them being accepted into the program. Since I do not agree with affirmative action, I think that this is totally unfair, and slightly insulting. I don't agree with giving somebody that is less qualified a opportunity over somebody who is fully qualified.- Orrion

The 10% program in Texas is when you graduate in the top ten percent of the class and automatically get admission to attend the college. I think that's it's fair and a good idea because that 10% has obviously been working hard prior to going to college. I also think it's fair for them to give minorities an advantage because usually in the real world minorities dont have the advantage. I can definitely see how some people would call this policy unfair though.

  3. The 10% program in Texas applies to students who are the top ten ten percent in their class and which they are automatically accepted in Texas University. They look at the students grades, GPA and etc. But one thing they intend to look for is race. For example, if one student is white that has a GPA of 3.4 and theres a hispanic who has the same GPA, the hispanic one is more likely to get in due to their race. The University believe that they're promoting diversity, which I think is full of crap. If this were to be reversed then that's considered rasism. I dont think this is fair, its not balanced and not EVERYONE is getting the same treatment. -Saf

  4. I believe it's unfair for certain group of people to have a bonus than others. The 10% program is giving people who are the top 10% of their class guarantee to the U of Texas. The Supreme Court rule this as a way to promote a more diverse college. I think the Supreme Court should be evaluated less rigorously because I feel religion shouldn't be counted against anything.

  5. The 10% program in Texas means that; if you graduated with top ten score in class you'll automatically get accepted in the college. I think it is fair because, in order to get top 10 score in High School you need to be very hard working, loyal, and talented that's the quality colleges looks for so it's fair. Those who don't qualify for 10% program the UofT evaluate everyone's qualifications, grades, and races too. I don't Know if its fair or not because i don't understand much about this affirmative action program so for now i am going to stay neutral.

  6. The 10% program is if you are in the top 10% of your class you automatically get into the university, but with minorities they get a little extra bonus and a better chance at getting accepted. I honestly am on both side of the argument. I can see the unfairness but then again its a good think that minorities have a way to get ahead when we have always gotten the short stick.

  7. 10% of students automatically get admitted to the University of Texas. I think that this approach is unfair because everyone should be treated equally. Every person that applies to a college, job, or anything should not be admitted nor denied because of the color of their skin. The policy is also unfair because of the reasons I have stated. ~ Uriel

    3. I agree with you on the applying to a job part but I believe the 10% is completely fair. Colleges want the best of the best academically, so its only fair that they accept the top 10% - Taryana Peterson

  8. The ten percent program is if you're one of the top 10 students in your school you automatically get accepted into texas university. I think that its fair and unfair at the same time. I see it as fair because they're helping blacks get into there college and usually if it was between a white and a black person the white person would get accepted but now with the BB (black benefits) Blacks have a better chance to get accepted.

  9. Honestly I believe that it is both fair and unfair due to people of color where denied many things. The 10% program is if a student is in the top 10 percent of their class they are granted an admission to the college regardless of their race. I think that this is a very different policy that sounds like its for a good cause. The fact that minorities get something extra I see it as a good thing because any person of color is considered a minority. It is for a good cause which is to create diversity and that is what all universities should have. In conclusion it think it is fair because they are trying to make an effort to help minorities knowing that they get treated differently.

    1. Wow! when you put it like that i can totally see it and i gotta say i kind of agree with you. Minority in this country have face many problems and its their chance to shine, but in the same time it's not fair to qualify students.

    2. They were denied back them but that was the past. Letting the past get to you and giving them a bonus isn't a way since they were fighting for equal rights.

  10. The 10% program allows anyone who graduated in the top 10% of their class to automatically attend the university. While others may say it's not fair because the 10% program already brings a majority of minorities I believe that it is fair. For once minorities have the upper hand in a situation. I believe it's fair because in minority school districts many of kids drop out due to financial circumstances. So that automatically lowers the amount of minorities who are in the top 10%, which lowers the amount of minorities accepted. Caucasians prohibiting us from sharing bathrooms, water fountains, clothing stores, and etc was fair. Even turning us into slaves and beating us mercilessly was fair, so for minorities to get admitted into a school because of their skin is completely fair - Taryana Peterson

The 10% program in Texas is the program that take a group of student that is on top of the class. i think is a unfair because people who not smart and did not get into that 10% will likely not able to attend the Texas university. i think this policy is only good for the people who make it to the 10 %, for other probably that is not a good policy. the superme court say that they need to accept all kind of student even they are not the 10% on top of the class .

  13. The 10% program in Texas is a scholarship to encourage students who graduate in the top 10% of their high school class to attend Texas University. I believe that they had good intentions applying this scholarship but it is unfair for those who aren't a minority and didn't make it into the 10% program because they most likely wont be able to get in.

  14. The 10% program in Texas is program that top 10% of the class will automatically get in and other students have to apply for it and they consider race. I think it is fair because most minority don't get many chance as white people. If a White and Hispanic student were to apply at the same time, they will pick Hispanic student over White student. The University of Texas looks for student grades, athletic, and race. I think its fair because I am minority.

  15. To understand why the Affirmative Action programs begun, one has to truly understand why it was implemented in the first place. Looking back at civil rights history, we see the undeniably cruel treatment of African Americans and other minorities. In the 1960's, when Affirmative Action was enacted, blacks couldn't get decent job or attend decent schools because of the racist mindset of employers. The only way to overcome this fallacious belief that minorities were subpar as blue and white collar workers, we needed to force employers to hire them. Looking forward 50 years, we see minorities being given a leverage into attending colleges or for getting jobs. Once the racial mentality and when there are an equal number of minorities as whites; then we can choose to evaluate more rigorously. - Victor

  16. Students that are in the top 10 of their classes automatically are eligible for 10% program that is offered at Texas colleges. If you look at how most colleges do their applications they want to have a mixture of students and like the video said 25% of the college population are minorities. As for the other people that are excluded from the university my opinion would be to find a different school to attend. I think the supreme court ruled accordingly. -Raven
